The publication “Uman. (Un) Known Histories of the City” is an attempt to portray Uman’s past by extending beyond the city’s “big stories” and focusing on local and individual experiences. At the same time, it attempts to set Uman in the broader context of the empires and states to which the city belonged for centuries and to place it more firmly in the context of the formerly multi-ethnic region of Eastern Europe. The publication comprises 10 chapters and offers selected topics that provide new perspectives on well-known pages of the city’s past and focus on little-known or neglected stories of Uman and its communities.  The book covers the following: the relationship between the city and the government in different periods; modernization processes; urban culture as an interaction of different communities and institutions, despite the fact of what faith and religion are in a city on the border; the phenomenon of the city through the stories of famous people; the changes brought to the city by two world war; and different memories and heritages in the modern city.
